The role of insulation and heating in preventing respiratory illness has been recognised in the government's 2020 Budget.
The COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund has provided an additional $56 million in funding to EECA's Warmer Kiwi Homes programme.
The increase in funding will assist approximately 9,000 more low income homes to retrofit ceiling and underfloor insulation or a heat pump in their living room. The increased funding has allowed the subsidy to increase to 90%, with the cost of a heat pump capped at $3,000 (inc GST).
The eligibility criteria has not changed which is based on you owning (and occupying) a home built before 2008 and either:
- You have a Community Services Card or CSC endorsed Gold Card OR
- Your home is in a targeted low-income neighbourhood (about 30% of NZ homes are).
We can tell you if your address is in one of the specified low-income neighbourhoods - simply send us your address to Register Your Interest in subsidies and we'll get back to you.
