Building Energy Efficient New Homes

When building a new home or renovating an existing one you have the best opportunity to make the smart choices to improve its long term comfort, health and energy efficiency.

Renovating or Building a New Home

Make your new home smarter, cheaper to run and more sustainable with our smart energy solutions.  Renovating or building a new home is the best time to improve the energy efficiency, health and comfort of your new home as many energy efficiency upgrades are more difficult and costly to add retrospectively. You may also be surprised at the funding support available to make sustainable improvements to your home through some councils and most banks.

It is worth upgrading from minimum building code levels of insulation and incorporating appropriate heating and ventilation from the beginning to create a more "passive home".  A Passive Home aims to maximise the thermal efficiency of your home to minimise or eliminate heating and cooling costs.

Smart Energy Solutions offers free advice and assessments of your new home or plans and we have experience making over 35,000 homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient. The main energy costs within your home relate to the thermal envelope, space heating, water heating and lighting - we can work with you and/or your builder to ensure your insulation, heating system, ventilation, downlights and water heating suit your needs and use energy wisely.  Book a Free Home Assessment or email us at [email protected]

5 Benefits of Building an ECO Home

Building an ECO home means combining sustainable, durable building materials to create a more comfortable, healthy and energy efficient home that lasts.

  1. Healthier Home: research by the University of Otago has proven that people living in warm dry houses have less respiratory health issues.
  2. Play your bit for the planet: Making environmental choices that do less harm to the planet and use less resources.
  3. Lower power bills: incorporating energy efficiency products may require a higher initial nvestment but the payback starts with your very first power bill. Focus on the products with the quickest payback period.
  4. Higher resale value: people are willing to pay more for an energy efficient home - especially if you can brag about your low power bills.
  5. Less maintenance: without adequate warmth and ventilation your home can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.  Costs associted with this include mould removal, paint damage, curtain damage and more.

New Home Insulation

Ceiling, underfloor and wall insulation are all mandatory in new homes so it can be easy to take it for granted.  Typically only the minimum level of insulation is used and yet upgrading to a higher R-Value will make your home warmer in winter, cooler in summer and more energy efficient.
Our advisors can talk to you about the various types of wall and ceiling insulation available and suggest what upgrades and R-Values will add to your comfort and lower your heating bills long term. Insulation is key to the creation of a Passive or Zero Energy Home and even if your aspirations aren't as high as that, the principle of maximising the thermal efficiency of your home for winter and summer comfort are sound.

Another important type of insulation to include is acoustic insulation for privacy and noise control. We recommend acoustic insulation around bathrooms, between floors and in internal walls behind TVs & sound systems.

Energy Efficient Heating

Heat Pumps are considered by EECA to be the most energy efficient form of electric heating for our homes.  We have a range of heat pump solutions from leading brands including Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin and we can help you select the best format for your living spaces and bedrooms. There are a range of design solutions with a more attractive indoors units as well as floor consoles.  For the ultimate in discreet heat pumps you can't look past a ducted system.

Ducted Heat Pumps

When you’re building a new home incorporating a ducted heat pump is a viable option for whole home comfort all year round.  Ducted heat pumps heat multiple rooms from the one outdoor heat pump unit and can be used either to heat the whole house to the same temperature or provide a single heating solution for all bedrooms or multiple living spaces.

Another advantage of a ducted system is that it is unobtrusive - it only has a subtle grill vent visible within the room leaving your wall space free.  There are also systems from Mitsubishi Electric and Smart Vent that cleverly combine a heat pump with heat-recovery ventilation as an integrated solution. Ducted heat pumps are a particular example where factoring it into your building plans is easier and more cost effective than adding it retrospectively.  We have ducted heat pump systems from Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin - two of the best residential ducted heat pump brands. New Home Ventilation

Ventilation is essential in homes to manage humidity and the damages it causes both to your health and property as well as improving overall air quality.  In planning the design of your home, consider opportunities for secure effective home ventilation for both winter and summer.

New homes are more airtight than most existing houses and so need appropriate balanced home ventilation systems. At your free home assessment we can explain the different types of ventilation system available including Smart Vent Evolve, Smart Vent Synergy and Mitsubishi Lossnay.

LED Downlights

Recessed downlights have become a popular feature in new homes however the technology used has changed enormously.  LED downlight fittings are best practice and are up to 85% more energy efficient than traditional incandescent downlights.  You should check that your architect/builder have specified LED rather than halogen or incandescent fittings for your new home.  We can provide further information on the options available.
